October 29 – In the wake of Erik ten Hag being fired as Manchester United coach, the next man up for the impossible job is Sporting Lisbon’s, Ruben Amorim.
The 39-year-old is the bookies the hot favourite to be the 10th manager to occupy the shoes of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, who seemingly cannot be replaced.
Amorim, who was linked with both Liverpool and West Ham United as they looked for replacements for Jurgen Klopp, and David Moyes, respectively comes with a highly coveted reputation.
In the space of six years, the Portuguese has moved swiftly through the ranks beginning his coaching journey at third-division Casa Pia in 2018, a move to Braga’s B team lasted three months before he was thrust into their first-team dugout in January 2020.
Sporting poached him in March of that year, and since taking the helm he has won the league, their first in 19 years, and two league cups. Other than being a collector of trophies, he has also been trumpeted a brave manager by bringing young, untried, talent into the first team, which has met great success.
With United’s transfer budget out of control after lavish spending by ten Hag, and previous managers, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, new minority shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is looking to introduce a different model.
The Red Devil’s success during the 90’s and noughties was built largely around ‘Fergie’s Fledglings’ namely, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary. Ratcliffe is looking at Amorim, to reproduce this magic for the club that has seemingly lost its way in terms of ‘who they are.’
While Mourinho, Luis Van Gal, and, ten Hag, did win cups, United have not been close to a Premier League title since 2013, when Ferguson helped the club to their record-breaking 20th top-flight title.
According to the stats, Sporting, under Amorim, boast one of the best attacks as well as the best defense in Europe’s top seven…
