The Telegraph report that Newcastle United look set to trigger a one-year contract extension for Sean Longstaff, keeping him at the club until 2026 and ending talk of him leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Longstaff, who has been a staple of the side since his first team debut in 2018, is currently tied down to his boyhood club until summer 2025, but after Dan Burn saw his contract extension confirmed in the past week, it comes as no surprise that Eddie Howe is wanting to retain some element of squad depth with reliable players who fit the homegrown quotas.
Speaking on the contract situation, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards commented “The extra year option has taken some of the pressure off, as it means Longstaff will be under contract until 2026 and will not be able to leave on a free transfer next summer.” Discussions over a new long-term deal will follow, with the midfielder considered an ‘important part of the squad.’
Edwards also provided a key insight into the current contract status of Alexander Isak after conflicting reports around the Swedish star’s future over the past week, revealing that we are NOT currently in talks to extend his deal but ‘will revisit’ this next summer.
Eddie Howe has previously described Isak’s contract as a “complex situation” given reported interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, but that Howe remains a big fan of the player despite his mixed start to the season.
“We of course love him and are desperate for him to stay at Newcastle for many years and score loads of goals for us. I don’t see a short-term issue with his contract.”
