Just when it appeared that Barcelona fans had come to terms with the fact that a Real Madrid player would be lifting the Ballon d’Or last night, news of Rodri’s win took Catalonia by storm.
Indeed, as confirmed by the rumours, it was the Spaniard who outdid Vinicius in the voting to take home the individual award in Paris and has since garnered support from across the globe.
Rodri’s speech after winning the award was special on many counts as he acknowledged all the parties responsible for him being on the stage and even showered special praise on Lamine Yamal.
One quote in particular, however, has got the internet talking about the midfielder’s class.
A win for Spain
As part of his speech after collecting the award, Rodri acknowledged that it was not an award for him as an individual but for his entire country.

After all, Spain has pitched up many deserved candidates over the past decade and a half but did not earn the Ballon d’Or owing to the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo dominance.
“This victory is not mine alone, but of whole Spanish football. This is for many players who did not get this award despite deserving it, such as Iniesta, Xavi, Iker, and Busi,” he said in a sentence of pure class as revealed by CBS Sports Golazo.
Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, the famous midfield trio who led Barcelona and Spain’s Golden Generation, all did not win the award in their playing days and it was forever seen as one of the biggest injustices in football.
Rodri’s win and his dedication to the award to the maestros thus brought much-needed closure to Spain who had not won the award in close to 50 years. The last winner, after all, was Luis Suarez in 1960.
