Steve Nickson joins Paul Mitchell in taking closer look at £50m target – Report

Newcastle United’s recruitment team are continuing to watch an exciting right-winger ahead of what promises to be a busy summer.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell is preparing to make his first major signing since arriving on Tyneside, with our PSR woes finally set to be lifted in the upcoming window.

A goalkeeper, centre-back and striker is also on our wanted list, but it’ll be fascinating to see who we end up targeting on the right-wing after waiting years to bring in a quality replacement for Miguel Almiron.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle’s recruitment team were taking a very close look at one Brentford star in particular on Wednesday night.

Lee Ryder reports that Steve Nickson was sat by Paul Mitchell and present to take a closer look at Bryan Mbeumo after several trips to the GTech Stadium to watch the Cameroonian this season.

It’s considered significant that Nickson was in attendance, suggesting our interest remains heading into summer. We are considering other options and won’t be forced to pay over the odds, although the Bees’ rumoured asking price may be within our reach.

£50m is what the Chronicle are suggesting the former Troyes talent will cost after bagging his 16th goal of the season from the penalty spot on Wednesday.

A signing of that calibre would represent a shift in approach and see Howe handed a Premier League proven goalscorer, although we won’t be the only side eyeing a summer bid.

Mbeumo may well be the perfect winger for Newcastle, but we may face stiff competition from Liverpool to land the 25-year-olds signature.

Mo Salah is the only man who is not an out and out striker to outscore Mbeumo in the Premier League this season. The winger is certainly proven at a top level and is a good age at 25.

Mbeumo can also play down the middle and showed his work rate at St. James on Wednesday before singing our praises at full time.

“It is a hard one tonight and we deserved more,” said Mbeumo. “It was a good performance but at the end it was not enough. I think we knew it was going to be a tough game against a very good side and at the end it was a bit frustrating. It is hard to take.

“We knew it is important to get the points away. It is always tough to come here. It is really tight and we are going to give it our best game by game and see where it takes us.”
