Steve Bruce has been speaking live on talkSPORT today about his time on Tyneside, where he’s made some frankly outrageous claims about former owner Mike Ashley.
With the debate around FFP/PSR rife following Nottingham Forest’s four-point deduction yesterday, he defended Ashley’s approach to spending, saying it was a “greatly run club” under his ownership.
“We talk about FFP…the club would never be in any distress under Mike Ashley. It was a greatly run club under Mike, and I know I’m going to get slated for saying that.
“The big thing is, we never had a lot of money to spend. We would spend exactly what the club generated, but that was never going to be enough to be successful.”
Bruce makes it seem like Ashley did us a favour. In reality, Newcastle were simply a vehicle for Sports Direct advertising and TV revenue under his ownership. We went from regulars in Europe and constantly competing – on and off the pitch – to two relegations and refusing to pay a £1m loan fee for Hamza Choudhury.
We had no sponsorships, no revenue streams and a rundown training ground where players used wheelie bins as iced baths. The reason the club had no money to spend was down to Ashley’s negligence, where each move made was to benefit himself, not the good of Newcastle United.
