Barcelona’s inability to perform well on the big stages in recent years has had a direct impact on their economy.
Apart from the understandable reduction of funds from prize money, their subpar performances have also brought down the revenue from sponsors including Nike.
As revealed by Mundo Deportivo in a recent update, the American giants now pay Barcelona only €42 million in place of the €52 million they used to as a direct result of the team’s performances.
Needless to say, the Catalans feel hard done by Nike’s valuation of the club’s jersey rights and are actively looking to terminate the deal. Puma, meanwhile, are working hard to secure the rights from the American brand.
Big differences
As relayed by the Spanish outlet, there is a massive difference between the offer presented by Puma and Nike to be the Blaugranas’ kit manufacturer.
The German company offer a signing bonus of €100 million and an annual payment of €100 million.
Further, the annual fee can go up to €120 million should a certain target of jersey sales be met. The aforementioned proposal is for a tenure of ten years.
Nike’s current contract includes a bonus of just €24 million and an annual payment of €42 million. As such, Barça are currently earning €66 million from Nike as per club sources, which is close to half of what the Puma deal could rake in.

The best-case scenario
Barcelona’s current deal with Nike runs until the summer of 2026 and can be extended till 2028.
However, Joan Laporta and Co. are looking for a termination in 2025, as relayed by the club president in a recent interview.
Nike are pressuring the club to continue for next season as they have already invested resources into designing the kit for 2024-25.
Barcelona, however, argue that they had officially informed the company of their decision to part ways well in advance and are exploring manufacturing the jerseys themselves.
