Barcelona’s Champions League dream comes to an end after being knocked out of the quarter-finals by PSG (4-6 agg.) – a game in which Barça had everything under control until Ronald Araujo’s red card.
The second leg at Montjuïc brought a lot of controversy for the Catalans, and Barcelona boss Xavi Hernández was highly annoyed with the referee.
The 44-year-old picked a red card from the sidelines, and could not stop himself from commenting on the referees post-match.
Irritation with the referee
“I told the referee that he was very poor. It was a disaster,” Xavi said.
Xavi and Araujo were not the only ones who were sent off, but also the club’s goalkeeping coach.
Xavi highlighted that the Uruguayan’s red was a turning point in the tie.
“It doesn’t matter how much we talk, the fact is that the red card ruined the match. I don’t like to talk about referees but we have to say it. We can’t be silent.”
Xavi added, “It’s a real shame. The referee ruined all of work this season. I wanted to play 11 vs 11, fairly.”
On Barcelona and Xavi’s future
“We were solid in the Champions League, notable I would say. We have to learn to control small details. Next year we’ll be back here.”
When being asked specifically whether it would be ‘him’ trying again next season, Xavi replied: “Barça will try again. I’m not important. Next year we’ll be back.”
