Barcelona’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League may have serious ramifications, especially from an economic perspective.
Last night’s defeat to PSG meant Barcelona have already missed out on an additional €12.5 million through prize money. Moreover, the club have failed to qualify for the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Barcelona missing out on such sources of revenue, the club may ultimately have to depend on player sales this summer, in order to even out their finances.
Frenkie de Jong in contention to leave
A recent report from Diario SPORT has highlighted that Barcelona are indeed desperate to make a big sale in the coming summer.
To that end, Frenkie de Jong is one of the biggest candidates to leave the club at the end of the season.

It must be remembered that de Jong’s contract at Camp Nou expires in 2026. There will soon come a time when European giants will look to secure his services on a free transfer.
Barcelona, therefore, have a decision to make, as far as de Jong’s contract is concerned. The Dutchman is one of the highest-paid players in the camp. But at the same time, he is quite important to the Barça setup.
Next few months to be crucial
The report adds that the next few months could prove to be crucial in determining the future of Frenkie de Jong.
Barcelona, for their part, must sort out their managerial vacancy before they can take a call on de Jong’s future, knowing the next manager might either prefer to keep the Dutchman in the squad or opt to sell him this summer.
Barcelona must also keep in mind that the club desperately require a new defensive midfielder. De Jong’s potential sale, to that end, could go a long way in helping the club fund a move for a new number six this summer.
