Dougie Freedman to Newcastle – Crystal Palace make late move after Toon talks

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons is reporting that Crystal Palace’s chairman Steve Parish is making a late push to keep director Dougie Freedman at the club amidst Newcastle’s interest.

It’s believed Newcastle see him as the ‘perfect appointment’ to work alongside Eddie Howe and the 49-year-old is said to be ‘open to a new challenge’, but Parish is now “doing everything he can” to retain the former Eagles striker.

The Guardian reveal that the Scot held talks with Toon officials last week and is expected to make a final decision on the job soon, with Newcastle keen to secure his appointment ahead of a huge summer for the club.

Freedman emerged as the leading candidate to replace Dan Ashworth in recent weeks, with reports claiming he is the frontrunner to land the job ahead of Johannes Spors due to his Premier League experience.

The Palace director has done some great work at Palace, who are a club on the up under impressive new coach Oliver Glasner. They’re already facing a fight to keep the likes of Toon target Michael Olise, Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi this summer – three of many EFL talents Freedman recruited – so it’s no surprise to see Parish putting up a fight for their chief talent spotter and sporting director.

Newcastle have been without a sporting director since February when Ashworth was placed on gardening leave ahead of his imminent move to Man Utd.
