Having finished seventh in the Premier League this season, Newcastle United are projected to be in pot 2 for the upcoming Conference League tournament should Man City beat Man Utd in today’s FA Cup final.
It may not be the competition that they had hoped for, but it would mean two consecutive seasons in Europe and another shot at a trophy to end the drought.
This is also the year that UEFA bring in a new format for all three of the European competitions, so instead of being drawn in a group of four, Newcastle will be playing six games against six different teams, three at home and three away.
As the projected pots show below, some of the bigger sides we could face include Napoli, Olympiacos, Real Betis and Copenhagen, while in the lower pots throw up the likes of Ordabassy from Kazakhstan, Vikingur Reykjavik from Iceland and Dinamo Batumi from Georgia:
It will certainly be a bit of a learning curve for everyone involved, but it will hopefully give Eddie Howe the chance to rotate his team and allow some key players to rest up a bit in the earlier stages of the competition to avoid another injury crisis.
Over to you, Man City!
