Newcastle eyeing move for £20m goalkeeper to compete with Nick Pope – Report

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are considering making a £20m move for Burnley’s James Trafford as they look to provide competition for Nick Pope next season.

A new goalkeeper looks to be somewhat of a priority for the Geordies this summer, whether that’s a new starting option to replace Pope or a young second choice who they can develop.

Trafford, of course, would be the latter and would be a top backup shot-stopper to have and learn from Pope with the idea that he could eventually take over from the 32-year-old.

It was originally thought that Aaron Ramsdale would be the number one option given his lack of playing time at Arsenal, but it looks as though his price would be too steep for Newcastle.

Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili is another one linked in recent weeks, but it may be that Trafford is the more affordable option after what was a difficult year for him behind a poor Burnley defence.
