The Athletic’s Chris Waugh is reporting that Johannes Spors is keen to join Newcastle following news that the club had missed out on Dougie Freedman, who is choosing to stay at Crystal Palace.
Freedman was Newcastle’s number one option to replace Dan Ashworth who has been on gardening leave since February, so it was obviously a big blow for him to reject the offer.
However, Spors was the other name mentioned in the conversation and it looks like German is very much open to the move should Newcastle make an approach in the next couple of weeks.
Waugh also understands that Newcastle are very keen to get in a new man by the end of June, so whether or not we see their efforts ramp up in the coming days remains to be seen.
Spors has a history with RB Leipzig and Vitesse but is definitely interested in making the leap to the Premier League, though whether Newcastle think he can be the man to lead them into this new era is another matter.
Here’s what Waugh said on Pod on the Tyne: “With Dougie Freedman having agreed a contract extension at Crystal Palace, he was the preferred choice of Newcastle,” he said.
“He had been in the final two, seemingly, with Johannes Spors of 777, the controversial ownership group who own multiple clubs across the world and are trying to take over Everton.
“He, on the sporting side, has a positive reputation. He remains in the running, as of the start of this week. He is yet to hear from Newcastle as to what happens next, but he still seems keen on the role, which is what we are led to believe.
“We do not know what is going to happen next. Newcastle had ideally wanted an appointment by the end of June. Freedman was the one they identified. It is undoubtedly a blow that he turned them down.”
