June 3 – Out of work for six months, the one-time self-styled Special One, Jose Mourinho, is on the move again, this time to Turkish giants Fenerbahce telling fans “this shirt is my skin”.
Thousands attended the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul on Sunday to watch the signing ceremony.
“Normally a coach is loved after victories,” said Mourinho. “In this case I feel that I am loved before the victories. That is a big responsibility that I feel. I promise you from this moment, I belong to your family.”
The two-time Champions League winning coach has signed a two-year deal to take over the 19-time Turkish champions.
Mourinho had already received a superstar-style welcome when he touched down at an Istanbul airport before being driven to the stadium.
The Portuguese coach, whose CV includes stints at Porto, Inter Milan and Chelsea, has not worked since being sacked by Roma in January and this will be his 11th club.
Like the self-acclaimed ‘Special One’, Fenerbahce are in need of a boost of their own having gone 10 years without winning the domestic title.
“Since the moment I met the president, I wanted to play for you because you are the soul of the football club,” Mourinho told the welcoming fans. “From the moment I sign my contract, your dreams are now my dreams.”
