Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has slated England’s display in last night’s 1-1 draw with Denmark and question Gareth Southgate’s baffling call leave Anthony Gordon on the bench again.
Gordon is yet to make an appearance in our opening two games, with Gareth Southgate opting to start Phil Foden. The Man City star struggled on the left once again last night, but it was Eberechi Eze who came on in his place in Thursday’s pitiful display.
In a post-match rant on the BBC, Shearer felt we showed “no energy, no guile” in a display that “wasn’t good enough”, questioning why Gordon was ignored once again when we were crying out for runners and pace around Harry Kane; not Foden drifting inside into space Kane is already taking up.

On the need for pace and runners around Kane, Shearer explained why Southgate was wrong to leave Gordon on the bench when he was exactly what the team were crying out for:
“I needed legs around me, I needed pace around me. I could still hold the ball up and head it, I still had a good touch. I could still score goals but the one thing I couldn’t do constantly is run in behind.
“He needs players around him to do that. I would do that. That’s why I would have Gordon in the team because he has the energy, the ability to run in behind, the ability to get in near him.
