According to Craig Hope at The Daily Mail, Newcastle were ready to sell Anthony Gordon to Liverpool due to issues with PSR, but talks with the club broken down.
It seems unthinkable, but it’s been widely reported that Newcastle are at risk of breaching financial rules unless they can offload at least one of their players for a decent fee before Monday.
Had the club sold Miguel Almiron or Kieran Trippier back in January when offers had been made they may not have ended up in this situation, but that seems a long time ago now.
The report states that Newcastle were reluctantly willing to part ways with Gordon for the right fee – a damning statement on how PSR is limiting clubs trying to compete – but Liverpool did not want to lose centre-back Jarell Quansah as part of the deal.
The worrying part for Newcastle fans is that it’s claimed talks may be revived this weekend, with this coming after exit links for Yankuba Minteh and Alexander Isak.
Without a significant sale, Newcastle may face a points deduction similar to the one Nottingham Forest received last year, though there is still time to solve the issue.
