Liverpool turned down the chance to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon this week after the Magpies wanted Jarell Quansah included in a deal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Newcastle are looking to sell one of their key players this weekend to meet the June 30 accounting deadline or risk a points deduction under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
That led to discussions with Liverpool over England international Gordon, Newcastle’s player of the year who only moved to Tyneside from Everton 18 months ago.
But with the Merseysiders already having Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo capable of playing in Gordon’s favoured wide-left position – and the fact they don’t want to lose highly rated centre-half Quansah – the deal broke down.
It leaves Newcastle in a tricky position with clubs knowing they need to raise cash, and quickly.

Who else might Newcastle sell?
Chelsea are reported to be interested in Sweden striker Alexander Isak while homegrown midfielder Elliot Anderson is a reported target for Nottingham Forest.
Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain but that deal looks unlikely as the Brazil midfielder is currently with his country at the Copa America.
Gordon is also on international duty with England at Euro 2024 and hopes to start tomorrow’s last 16 clash with Slovakia after a brief cameo off the bench against Slovenia on Tuesday.
“I think if I train to the very best of my ability, do the best I can everyday, that’s my way of giving the manager a headache in terms of selection and the rest I can’t control,” he said.
“I don’t think I need any opportunity to want it more. As I said, I can only control so much and that’s everything I do every day and I try to push the lads as best as I can when I train.
