TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan has hit back at Jim Ratcliffe’s suggestions that Newcastle are being “very difficult” over Dan Ashworth, insisting we are “well within their rights” to keep him on gardening leave.
Despite Ashworth making it known that he wanted to join Man United in February via secret emails, Newcastle have been unwilling to let him start work at Old Trafford unless Ratcliffe’s Reds agree to our compensation demands.
Since then, he has been placed on gardening leave and has threatened an arbitration hearing to sort out his future. Reports from ESPN claimed late last night that the two clubs are edging closer to an agreement, but Ratcliffe has spat his dummy out on several occasions, calling us “difficult” and “awkward” in a recent interview.
A few days on from that petty remark on Bloomberg, Simon Jordan has responded. Watch what he’s had to say below:
It’s quite astounding how someone so successful in business can’t seem to wrap his head around the idea of gardening leave and paying compensation for an important member of staff who was contracted to the club. Ashworth signed an agreement over the terms of any gardening leave agreement, so Man Utd must put up or shut up if they want him early.
As Jordan rightly points out, Ratcliffe seems to be blinded by the supposed ‘lure’ of Man United and the nature of contracts in the world of football. If he wants him in so badly ahead of the summer, he’ll have to pay for it.
