It was a devastating night for Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil in the early hours of Sunday, as the Newcastle midfielder crashed out of Copa America at the quarter-final stage after losing to 10-man Uruguay on penalties.

It was Bruno’s fourth straight start at this summer’s Copa America in the USA, where he’s previously played their group stage clashes with Costa Rica (0-0 draw), Paraguay (4-1 win) and Colombia (1-1 draw).

However, last night saw Brazil back in Las Vegas as they entered the knockout stages against an Uruguay side now managed by former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

After a 0-0 draw in the 90, which featured plenty of yellow cards, a host of nasty challenges and a straight red for Uruguay’s Nahitan Nández, the tie went straight to penalties.

Sadly for Bruno, who was subbed off in the closing stages, Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz both had their spot kicks saved before Manuel Ugarte decided the tie by firing past Alisson, sending Uruguay into a semi-final with Colombia next week.

Fellow Mag Fabian Schar suffered a similar shootout exit a few hours earlier, as England dumped out Switzerland on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the Euros.

Schar slotted his spot kick past Pickford, but perfect penalties from Palmer, Saka, Toney, Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold sent the Three Lions through.
