According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are expected to open talks over an improved contract for Anthony Gordon this summer.
North-East reporter Chris Waugh insists Newcastle have ‘no interest’ in selling the winger following an enquiry from boyhood club Liverpool and tentative links with Man City this week.
Eddie Howe is keen to speak with the 23-year-old once he returns from Euro 2024 and reassure the England international that he can achieve his ambitions on Tyneside after reports suggested his ‘head was turned’ by interest from Anfield.
It’s also worth noting that Gordon’s current deal is due to expire in two years time. While that may not seem like an immediate concern, the club will be reluctant to let his contract drift into its final 12 months, meaning talks over an extension and improved terms would make total sense.
Gordon could not only be rewarded for his outstanding season at St James’ Park, where he notched double figures for goals and assists, also scoring against all of the ‘big six’ sides, but it would end any speculation of him leaving this summer.
He’s had a frustrating Euros, with Gareth Southgate limiting the former Everton talent to a few short cameos, but it would be a huge boost if he was to commit his future to the club in the coming weeks.
