Barcelona scrambling to secure the future of superstar duo whose contracts end in 2026

Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong were two mainstays who were said to be potential candidates to leave Barcelona this summer to bring in much-needed cashflow.

As it turns out, both players are injured and thus virtually out of contention to leave in the ongoing transfer market.

The development has not only left the management stranded from a financial standpoint but also from a sporting one.

Looking to renew

As revealed in a recent report by Cadena SER, Barcelona are keen on renewing the deals of both Araujo and De Jong at the earliest.

With every passing day, however, the club’s leverage over their future reduces. After all, Araujo and De Jong are contractually obligated to Barcelona until the summer of 2026 after which they can walk away as free agents.

As the days pass, Barcelona thus find it increasingly complicated to maintain their terms on a possible renewal. After all, they will be entering the final year of their contract next summer.

Departure ruled out

At this point, it is clear that neither De Jong nor Araujo will leave Barcelona this summer. Both players will be integral parts of Hansi Flick’s project but their participation is directly linked to their return from injury.

The Dutchman’s setback was never expected to be as serious as it has panned out. He was ruled out for the US tour and is a doubt to feature in the La Liga opener vs Valencia too.

Araujo, meanwhile, is out until the end of the year and the Blaugrana will likely not even register him with La Liga for the first half of the season. His return, thus, will only be in January.
