Following a NUFC Blog exclusive earlier today revealing our interest in Marc Guehi, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has now confirmed that Newcastle have indeed opened discussions with Crystal Palace over the 24-year-old centre-back.
The news sparks some much-needed excitement across the fanbase and offers a hat-tip to our very own Olly Hawkins, who mentioned Guehi earlier today before Ornstein’s big ‘exclusive.’
Guehi is coming off the back of a standout Euro 2024 campaign, where he quickly became one of the most consistent and solid performers on England’s road to the final. The biggest clubs in the world were rumoured to hold an interest, with Real Madrid thought to be taking a closer look at Guehi as the tournament progressed.
Given that Crystal Palace have already lost such a big player in Michael Olise this summer, with his transfer fee being lower than they would like due to his release clause, the South London club will certainly not be looking to settle for a reasonable price for another of their biggest assets. He’s out of contract in two years time, but he won’t come cheap.
Guehi has spoken highly of Newcastle previously, claiming that St James Park was his favourite away ground to play in in the Premier League. Anthony Gordon is rumoured to have been trying to persuade Guehi to come to the Toon during the Euros following his comments.
Regardless of how the move progresses, negotiations being opened for Guehi at minimum establishes that Newcastle intend to make big moves in the transfer market and that our patience as fans is potentially on the brink of being highly rewarded
