Following their final pre-season friendly on the US tour against AC Milan, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed that they will not sign any midfielders this summer.
Coming into the transfer window, it appeared that the priority objective for Barcelona would be to bring in a pivot midfielder, especially after Oriol Romeu’s signing last summer had backfired.
However, once Flick took over, the focus completely shifted towards attacking additions in the form of Nico Williams and Dani Olmo, while the signing of a defensive midfielder took a backseat.
Now, with the emergence of young talent from the academy in Marc Casado and Marc Bernal, Flick seemingly has enough confidence in the La Masia duo, so much so that he has confirmed Barcelona will no longer sign a new midfielder.
“We have several injured midfielders with great quality. When they come back we will be a better team and I think I have enough players there,” said Flick after the game, referring to the fact that Barça are currently without Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong.
On the game against AC Milan and the US tour
Having addressed the transfer situation, Flick also spoke about Barcelona’s performance against AC Milan in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw before the Italians clinched the win on penalties.
“When we all press with intensity, that’s the way to go. Sometimes we have to be braver because it’s necessary. After the break we improved, we changed. It was fantastic how we pressed, the whole team was intense,” said Flick.
