“It’s a very tricky situation” – Howe explains Osula dilemma and why he “excites us”

Eddie Howe has described new signing William Osula as an exciting talent with “extreme pace” and a “really good physical profile” – but accepts there are several areas of his game to develop following his arrival from Sheffield United.

Howe reveals that he’d become aware of the 21-year-old following Jason Tindall’s spell at Bramall Lane and have been tracking his progress for the past three years.

The boss believes he’s come to the “right place” to develop his game as an exciting but raw centre-forward, but admits it’s a “very tricky situation” to bring in a third-choice striker who can complement and compete with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson. Hopefully that dynamic works and he not only learns from them in training but finds a route to some much-needed game time.

“He’s a player I’ve known since Jason’s (Tindall) time at Sheffield United really.” Howe said. “We’ve been tracking him for the last three years.

“He’s a player that really excites us. He’s got some really good raw ingredients to become a very, very good centre-forward. He’s got extreme pace, a really good physical profile – he’s 6’3, verging on 6’4 – and he’s got good technical skills as well. There are areas of his game to develop, obviously, but I think he’s coming to the right place to do that.

“It’s a very tricky situation. We have two outstanding centre-forwards and to find someone to compliment them, isn’t as easy. To find young striker to develop, he won’t have two better to learn from. Coming to a healthy environment.

“Financially, it has to work for us as well. It’s a good deal for us. We’ve got a lot of work to do with him but he’s a good character. Of course, with Alex and Callum hopefully both being fit for the majority of the season and carrying that attacking load together, then when you have a sum of money to spend, you’re logically not going to spend a huge sum of money in that position when you have…
