August 9 – Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness is the latest figure to denounce the expansion of the footballing calendar – taking aim at UEFA as well as FIFA.
This season’s Champions League is being increased to 36 teams while the new Club World Cup in 2025 will have 32 teams and a total of 63 matches.
“What some officials at UEFA or FIFA are planning is madness,” Hoeness was quoted as saying.
“It cannot go on like this, this accumulation of competitions must be stopped. Sensible people in this business, and in fact at many large clubs, think similarly. At some point enough is enough
“What some officials at UEFA or FIFA are planning is madness. It will not make the sport better, but worse, players will be injured even more, perform less well, and ultimately interest will wane.
“If you have highlights every third day, you will no longer be interested.”
