Howe drops Trevan Sanusi hint and names “standout performer” from Brest win

Eddie Howe believes it’s “too early” for Trevan Sanusi to go out on loan an has praised Lloyd Kelly’s performance in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Brest.

The boss feels the best thing for Sanusi’s development will be to stay on Tyneside, improve certain aspects of his game – Howe feels he still has lots to work on tactically – and “build him up physically” so he’s “robust enough” for Premier League football, hinting that the 17-year-old could have a part to play this season.

Sanusi has featured in each of our last five pre-season games, catching the eye in a 2-0 defeat to Yokohama before a brilliant second 45 in Friday’s 4-0 win over Girona.

As for Kelly, Howe was “really pleased” with the defender’s display in a shutout win over Brest, believing he was one of the “standout performers” and displayed his athleticism, pace and quality on the ball. Here’s what Howe had to say on both:

Howe on Trevan Sanusi “Personally I think it’s too early to loan him. The biggest thing we have to do is to develop his talent and to keep improving his game – but also develop him psychically.

“I thought he did well tonight. I think he’s got bits to learn, of course, for someone his age. Tactically he’s got things to improve. We’ve got to build him up physically to protect him and to make sure he’s robust enough to deal with the rigours of the Premier League. But he’s left a positive impression on us and I’m really pleased with him.”

Howe on Lloyd Kelly“I was really pleased with Lloyd today, I thought he was one of our standout performers. I thought he looked really good on the ball, very mobile and athletic, defended really well.”
