To the dismay of some Newcastle United fans hoping for good news on Sunday, Crystal Palace named Marc Guehi in their starting 11 for their final pre-season friendly of the summer at home to Nantes on Sunday.
I remain hopeful he’ll sign, despite suggestions that Palace are holding out for a whopping £65m after ongoing talks between Paul Mitchell and Steve Parrish, but the fact he started and captained Oliver Glasner’s side is a clear sign that nothing is agreed just yet.
Starting alongside Fulham-linked Joachim Andersen, Guehi was actually at fault for the opening goal (watch below), where Nantes centre-back Jean-Charles Castelletto beat him in the air from a corner to hand the Ligue 1 side a 1-0 lead.

There’s not many weaknesses to his game, but this can be one of them as a 6 foot centre-back. #NUFC

There’s not many weaknesses to Guehi’s game and he coped well physically at Euro 2024 – he was superb against a big and physical Serbia team in our opening game – but this is something he is susceptible to as a relatively short (6 foot) central defender.
Hopefully he comes through the match unscathed and we can finally strike an agreement in the coming days.
