Gabriel Slonina’s Barnsley debut is one he won’t forget anytime soon.
Slonina made five saves, including two shootout stops in Barnsley’s 4-2 shootout win over fellow League One side Wigan Athletic on Tuesday. The Chelsea loanee played 90 minutes in the match and walked away as one of the major bright spots in Darrell Clarke’s squad. After making three key saves during regulation, Slonina made two impressive penalty stops in the shootout.
The 20-year-old earned Man of the Match honors among the Barnsley faithful, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the August schedule. Slonina will hope to retain the No. 1 spot when Barnsley visits Lincoln City on Saturday in League One play.
“[The goal is] to get promoted to the Championship with Barnsley,” Slonina told BBC Sport Sheffield. “They were very close last year and I know they are very motivated to get there this season. We are ready to push towards that.”
Elsewhere in England, Lynden Gooch assisted once off the bench in Stoke City’s EFL Cup win. Auston Trusty scored his first goal for Sheffield United.
