One of MLS’ young dual-national prospects looks to be shifting his international focus away from the U.S. men’s national team.
Esmir Bajraktarevic has been called up to the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches this September, the federation announced Friday. Bosnia-Herzegovina will travel to both the Netherlands and Hungary this September in a pair of Nations League group stage matches.
The Wisconsin-born midfielder made his senior USMNT in January’s 1-0 friendly loss to Slovenia but hasn’t featured on the international level since.
“From my first phone call with Esmir Bajraktarevic and his dad there was no dilemma for him, the choice was always the National Team of Bosnia-Herzegovina and that is why it is so great that he is with us now,” Bosnia-Herzegovina manager Emir Spahic said.
Bajraktarevic, 19, joined the New England Revolution’s academy in 2021 before signing a professional contract with Revs II. He made his MLS debut in 2022 and has proceeded to make 36 league appearances, scoring two goals and registering three assists (in 2024).
Bajraktarevic featured for both the U.S. Under-19 and Under-23 men’s national teams since 2022, being an original part of Marko Mitrovic’s U-23 squad last October. However, he did not make Mitrovic’s Olympic roster for the Paris Games this summer.
Bosnia-Herzegovina are ranked 75th in the world and have moved between Divisions A and B of the Nations League since its start in 2018-19.
