Newcastle reopen talks over loan-to-buy deal after £15m bid – Report

Newcastle United are back in talks to sign James Trafford, according to reports on Monday morning.

TalkSPORT report that we’ve reopened talks with Burnley and are looking to bring in the England U21 star on a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy next summer.

Newcastle had a £15m bid rejected by the Championship side back in June, but it seems we are exploring a loan-to-buy deal that would suit the club from a PSR perspective. However, it’s not clear if Burnley would accept these terms.

We have five goalkeepers on our books in Pope, Dubravka, Vlachadimos, Ruddy and Gillespie, but Dubravka could leave before Friday’s deadline and Vlachadimos has been linked with a potential loan move of his own after missing out on our last two matchday squads.

Trafford played in Burnley’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on Saturday, where Clarets boss and former Mag Scott Parker was asked about his future after the game. He said: “At this moment in time, he’s here. What you need to understand is that speculation is speculation. James is here and James has got the shirt, hence why he played.

“To answer your question, is he the number one, at this moment in time he is. But in saying that he’s got someone behind him, or two others behind him that will push and try and get that shirt off him.

“What happens in the future? I don’t know, I can’t answer that. But as of now, this is someone who I thought was brilliant on Monday night. He showed his quality again.”
