According to Sky Sports in Germany, Newcastle are now exploring a move to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan.
Sky Germany’s Philipp Hinze reports that the 24-year-old could leave before Friday’s deadline and is receiving interest from Newcastle, who are on the lookout for a right-footed centre-back after failing to land Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi thus far.
However, it seems like it won’t be an easy deal to do at this stage of the window. Hinze reports that he’d demand a ‘very high transfer fee’ and Leipzig would need a replacement to sanction the Frenchman’s sale.
Barcelona have also enquired about a deal for the versatile defender, who is also receiving interest from Liverpool and clubs in Saudi Arabia.
Time will tell if this is a sign we’re genuinely pursuing other options to Guehi, but it is worth noting that Simakan can also play at right-back; a useful trait if Kieran Trippier could leave in the next few days.
