TalkSPORT host Jeff Stelling has U-turned on his prediction that Newcastle United will secure a top-four finish this season – despite Eddie Howe’s Mags picking up seven points from a possible nine in our opening three league games.
Speaking two days before our opening game against Southampton, Stelling said: “For me, Newcastle had a lot of injuries last season. But this season if they stay relatively injury-free, they do not have Champions League to cope with this time. They’re trying to strengthen at the back with [Marc] Guehi. I’m gonna go with Newcastle for fourth place.”
Of course, Newcastle did not sign Marc Guehi in the end and failed to make a single major signing all summer, but Stelling has already gone back on his top-four prediction after watching Sunday’s 2-1 win over Spurs.
“I’m just going to say one thing and Newcastle fans don’t get on my back about it, because I had you finishing top four. Having seen yesterday [against Tottenham], actually having looked at your bench yesterday, I don’t think you can finish top four.
“Because the lack of activity, not just during this transfer window, but the previous transfer window as well, means that squad is pretty much threadbare. So I might just have to change my mind about Newcastle finishing in the top four. But a great, great win.”
I can see why Stelling may have his doubts. Seven points from an available nine is a strong start, but we didn’t sign Guehi or anyone else that improves our first team and are yet to play well this season. However, if we can keep our star men fit, keep finding ways to win and improve our overall performances after the international break, you just never know.
