Darren Eales rubbishes Paul Mitchell claims and Newcastle turn attention to January

There were some conflicting reports over the weekend surrounding Paul Mitchell’s plans at Newcastle United after a frustrating summer for our new sporting director.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards revealed that he’s already turned his attention to the January transfer window and is intending to launch a renewed bid for Marc Guehi, while Matt Hughes released a piece for The Sun claiming the 43-year-old was ‘unhappy and could walk away’ if relations do not improve.

Starting with the latter, it’s believed the club have quickly shut down claims that Mitchell could quit, with The Chronicle told that CEO Darren Eales has rubbished any talk of unrest behind the scenes, remaining adamant that our new sporting director can work well alongside Eddie Howe.

They also report that Mitchell’s contract at Newcastle is similar to Howe’s, insisting he is committed to the short, medium and long term as he prepares to put his vision into action at St James’ Park.

As for our January plans, The Telegraph report that Mitchell is already making plans for January, where Newcastle are expected to be ‘active’ and armed with money to spend after failing to make any major signing across the two transfer windows in 2024.

Edwards expects Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi to be targeted once again, reporting that a fresh bid for the 24-year-old centre-back is likely to be submitted. By January, he’ll have entered the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park, giving Palace a big decision to make should their captain fail to sign a new deal between now and then.
