Gio Reyna was expected to be sidelined through the October international break, but things look to be changing for the U.S. men’s national team attacker.
Reyna is making good progress in his injury recovery at Borussia Dortmund, manager Nuri Sahin told reporters Wednesday. The 21-year-old has been sidelined since leaving USMNT camp last month due to a groin strain.
His latest injury has forced him to miss each of the last three matches for the Black and Yellow, in which Dortmund has won two of those.
Injuries have plagued Reyna’s time in Germany over the past few seasons, as well as his international career to date. However, a strong rehabilitation stint could lead to Reyna getting back on the field as early as next week.
“Things are looking good for Gio, surprisingly quickly too,” Sahin said. “We said that he would only be available after the international break, but the way things are going right now, it’s possible that he could be considered for the last two games before the international break. Everything he’s doing looks very good.”
Sahin has already ruled Reyna out of Friday’s Bundesliga showdown with Bochum but next week’s UEFA Champions League tie with Celtic, as well as an Oct. 5 league date with Union Berlin have not been ruled out.
An early return for Reyna could also see him included in Mauricio Pochettino’s first USMNT camp in October as well. The Americans host Panama and visit Mexico in a pair of friendlies.
