Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper charged for drink driving

Former Arsenal goalkeeper and member of that famous ‘Invincibles’ side Jens Lehmann has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drink driving in his native Germany.

Lehmann was a Premier League title winner with Arsenal as the Gunners notably went the entire season unbeaten in 2003/04, while his fine form was also instrumental to them reaching their first, and to date only, Champions League final in the 2005/06 campaign.

Since retirement, Lehmann has had spells in both coaching and punditry, but he’s now potentially committed a very serious offence as German outlet Bild have reported on him being arrested after his “unusual” driving behaviour was spotted.

Lehmann remains under investigation and has had his driving license confiscated, and it could be that he’ll face further serious repercussions for an offence that can really endanger people’s lives, as well as his own.

Speaking to The Sun, senior public prosecutor Anne Leiding said: “Mr. Lehmann was subjected to a police check on September 23, 2024 at around 1.30 a.m. due to his unusual driving behaviour in a car in the inner city area of Munich.

“The police are said to have noticed a clear smell of alcohol and an unsafe manner.

“A breath alcohol test did not produce any usable results, whereupon a blood sample was ordered and the driver’s licence was confiscated.

“Our investigations are still pending. Suspicions of drunk driving continue.”

Lehmann was asked for comment by Bild, but told them: “I can’t say anything about it at the moment.”
