Newcastle United have triggered an extension in the contract of Dan Burn which will now take him up to the summer of 2026.
This was confirmed in Friday’s press conference at the club’s Benton training base, where Head of Communications Lee Marshall revealed that the 6ft 7′ defender had extended his deal for a further year after Eddie Howe was quizzed on his future.
Burn’s deal had been set to expire in about eight months time, leaving Newcastle in a tricky position given how important he has been so far this season at centre-back, but he’s set to stay on Tyneside for at least another season.
Having signed from Brighton in the first window post-takeover, the defender has been integral to our Champions League qualification and European push despite playing out of position at left-back for most of his games.
The now 32-year-old has moved back to a central role with Sven Botman having suffered an ACL injury and has arguably been our most important player this season, with his battle against Haaland a particular highlight.
As a boyhood Newcastle fan Burn is clearly happy at the club and Eddie Howe obviously values him as a player and leader in the dressing room, so the extension comes as no surprise and will be welcomed by all parties.
Newcastle now have a handful of other tough decisions to make with the contracts of Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Martin Dubravka, Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy all set to expire next summer.
