The seemingly unending saga between Barcelona and the club’s links with former referee and vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira is back in the media headlines.
Last month, La Liga president Javier Tebas reignited the controversy, stating that he believed the Catalans could be sanctioned for ‘sports corruption’ despite charges against the club being dropped for a lack of evidence.
Speaking at the FC Barcelona Ordinary General Assembly earlier today, club president Joan Laporta provided an update on the situation of the club’s battle with the famed allegations.
“We are winning the Negreira case,” he began, sharing a positive update at the event.
Laporta then went on to reveal how the Blaugrana were being targeted and waging a lonely battle with the world seemingly against them.
“We are fighting against everything and everyone. We feel it every day. We are fighting against those who support the ‘Negreira case’. They condemned us before judging us.”
He elaborated on how news on the topic came up every time the team performed well on the field, a clear sign that there is a larger agenda against Barcelona and their success.
“Every time we do well, they bring up the subject. There are people who are angry that we win and we have to defend ourselves. We can’t show weaknesses. We have to be strong.”
Finally, he revealed his optimism that Barcelona would end up on top, saying: “I insist that I do not share the apocalyptic predictions of some, which are not there and are not expected. At Barça, we have to be strong to fight against everything.“
Barcelona return to action tomorrow night against Sevilla in what will be the team’s first game after the international break. Needless to say, the objective will be to keep their momentum going ahead of a crucial week.
