Newcastle eyeing another Chelsea talent wanted by Real Madrid and Liverpool – Report

Newcastle are “monitoring” Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong, according to reports.

In a move that would somewhat replicate the Magpies’ clinching of Lewis Hall on an initial loan deal last year, Eddie Howe’s men are looking at the defender as competition for Tino Livramento in seasons to come.

The Cobham player is also liked by Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as European heavyweights Real Madrid, reports the Independent, so it seems Newcastle are facing stiff competition for the teenager.

The outlet states that the La Liga giants see Acheampong as a possible short-term option at right-back and have a long-standing interest in the 18-year-old after Dani Carvajal sustained an injury, while their backup Joan Martinez is out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury.

Acheampong joined England’s under-20s recently after a successful period with the under-19s. He is under contract at Chelsea until June 2026 and has one senior call-up to his name, featuring under Mauricio Pochettino last season against Tottenham.

Indeed, Newcastle successfully managed to negotiate a deal for Hall in 2023, with the left-back joined on loan with a permanent clause attached if certain clauses were met. Over the summer, the Tyneside outfit paid the automatic fee of £28 million, while £7 million in add-ons could still be forthcoming.

Chelsea have seen former academy players such as Trevor Chalobah and Mason Mount leave in recent seasons, as the Blues have continued to buy players from other sides that immediately enter the first-team.

It’s not clear how much Acheampong would cost Newcastle, but Chelsea do not wish to sell, particularly to a fellow Premier League club.
