Inaki Pena proved his worth at the Santiago Bernabeu with a sensational performance, as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-0 on Saturday night.
Stepping in the goal in the absence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the La Masia product showed confidence in aerial duels and displayed sharp reflexes in one-on-one situations with against Kylian Mbappe.
Speaking to the media after the game, Pena highlighted the defensive discipline shown by his team on the night, as he said:
“The manager has demanded a high defensive line from day one. Yes, it’s risky to play with so much space behind us, but we’ve executed it perfectly against some of the world’s most dangerous attackers in our matches against Bayern and Real Madrid.
“The line can’t drop back, and this proves that the idea fits our style of play. The good work is reflected in the number of offsides we forced.”

Continuing, Pena emphasised on what the win meant for Barcelona, coming right after another impressive victory against Bayern Munich, saying:
“We’re very happy. We came from playing against Bayern, it was a crucial week, and it’s been a fantastic week.
“We should enjoy this, but there’s still a long way to go, and our important objectives are against the world’s best teams. We’ve changed our mentality, and the team has improved tremendously – the number of goals we’re scoring is incredible.”
Ever since the signing of Wojciech Szczesny, there have been murmurs about Pena’s position in goal, but a clean sheet at the Bernabeu could be seen as a personal vindication for the 25-year-old.
“Maintaining a clean sheet is another of the manager’s requirements, and personally, I’m delighted to have played well, and I hope it continues this way,” he remarked.
