March 11 – Danish Football Union (DBU) chairman Jesper Møller has said that FIFA and UEFA are interested in overturning the ban that prevents Russian clubs, and the Russian National Team, from competing in their competitions.
Teams from the country have been unable to compete in FIFA and UEFA organised competitions since beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia – a sanction imposed after Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic refused to play the country in World Cup qualifiers.
In 2023, UEFA attempted to bring Russian U17 teams back into the fold, but European governments and a majority of football associations didn’t accept lifting the ban for youth teams.
A UEFA executive committee member at the time, Møller was among those who invoked the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to justify the idea of allowing Russia’s U17 teams to play.
Now, Møller has suggested that a return of Russian clubs and national teams could be on the horizon.
“So, what everyone is waiting for now is a congress at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the end of March, where I think it will be on the agenda,” said Møller. “Because it won’t be on the agenda at FIFA until it’s been at the IOC.”
“We must expect it to come on the agenda at some point. Our position is clear. Russia will not return until there is a peace agreement.”
Under USA President Donald Trump there has been a shift in geopolitics with America seeking closer ties to Russia again. However, the EU remains distant from the current regime in the country.
